Professional print and digital book formatting for independent authors
If you’ve tried to format your manuscript for either a paperback or eBook (or both) using software like Microsoft Word, then you know the results can be patchy to say the least, despite spending hours to try to get the final file right. There are strange page breaks in your book, ugly text wrapping or inexplicable characters.
Fortunately, you don’t have to waste your time trying to get that Word doc to work. Using specialist software called Vellum, I can produce a professionally formatted book interior that will rival any produced by traditional publishers and which is ready for uploading to all self-publishing platforms (Apple, Kindle, Barnes & Noble, Kobo, Google Play, Nook, etc).
- a final manuscript in Microsoft Word doc. or docx. format
- an eBook cover jpg file
- an ISBN for print editions (optional for eBooks)
- desired trim size for print editions (see options available here)
- front and end matter (i.e. dedication, acknowledgements, mailing list signup, ‘also by’ list)
Vellum uses in-built styles, which are very flexible but which do have certain limitations. If you have a very clear idea of how you want your book to look, please bear in mind that perhaps not all of your design choices will be achievable and you may want to consider other, more flexible formatting options, such as hiring an Adobe InDesign book formatter.
Also, the software works best with text-based manuscripts. It can support jpg images, but cannot support tables. Again, if your book features lots of tables and images, you may be better off using a software like Adobe InDesign.

Do you need your handwritten manuscript professionally typed?
If you intend to submit your manuscript to a literary agent or publishing house, you’re going to need to catch their eye. Impress them by presenting a professional manuscript that meets standard book publishing formats.
Or perhaps you are planning to self-publish either a Print on Demand (POD) paperback or eBook using Amazon’s Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP), iBooks, Kobo, Barnes & Noble or Google Play. If so, you will need to have your manuscript formatted to meet with their submission and uploading requirements.
To produce a document that is A4, double-spaced and font size 12 – suitable for submission to a literary agent (standard manuscript format):
From unclear, handwritten copy
– £10.00 per 1,000 words*
From clear, handwritten copy
– £12.00 per 1,000 words*
*Please note, these charges apply to manuscripts that are written in English in a straightforward manner. Should your work include a high number of words and phrases from non-English languages (i.e. French, Latin, Spanish, Italian, Indian, etc.), tables, equations, or anything else that is not common English language for books, there may be an additional charge or increase in the rate.
If you are unsure whether this will apply to your manuscript, then please send me a good example of the types of non-English wording that are likely to occur and I will come back to you with a quotation.
