Proofreading

Professional proofreading services for authors, students and businesses

Whatever kind of document you produce, whether a novel, marketing material or academic essays, you need it to be as error-free as possible to create the best impression. You need professional proofreading for documents because you want your readers to focus on their positive aspects, not on the mistakes you’ve made. Also, carelessness with your documents can lead your reader to wonder what else you may be careless with. In business this could result in lost customers; in novels, lost readers.

As a trained proofreader, I offer 3 levels of professional proofreading services  (see below) to suit every budget and requirement, so whether you just need a fresh pair of eyes to check you haven’t made any gaffes or need someone to improve your writing, I can help.

Basic Proofreading

This proofreading service will:

  • Correct spelling mistakes
  • Correct grammar
  • Correct punctuation
  • Correct typos

Your writing and authorial style will not be altered or edited. This level of proofreading means that errors in your document will be noted and amended.

Best for

People who simply want their documents checked for errors and who do not want nor need help regarding the content, style or language used.

Improved Writing Proofreading

This level of proofreading will:

  • Correct spelling mistakes
  • Correct grammar
  • Correct punctuation
  • Correct typos
  • Make minor changes to text to improve language usage and flow

Minor amendments to text will be made, along with suggestions for improvement where appropriate.

Best for

People who are reasonably happy with their writing but who welcome suggestions for minor improvements.

Editing and Proofreading*

This is a longer, 2-stage process.

Stage 1

The text is edited to substantially improve the writing and is then returned to the client for review.

Stage 2

The client has reviewed and accepted/rejected changes and returned the finalised text ready for proofreading.

Best for

People who are unsure about the quality and/or clarity of their writing and would like substantial help to improve it.

*Please note, whilst I am a trained proofreader, I do not claim to be a trained editor. My editing service is provided on the understanding that I will be using my own writing skills in business documents and creative writing to determine which changes will improve the client’s text.

Proofreading Methods

All levels of proofreading are carried out using Microsoft Word’s Track Changes function (unless the client specifies otherwise). You will be supplied with two versions of your proofread text: one with Changes Shown so you can see where I have made amendments, and one with Changes Accepted so you have a ‘clean’ copy to read.

However, I can also perform markup on printed documents; you will need to have a knowledge of the BSI standard proofreading marks.

What documents will benefit from professional proofreading services?

Basically, whatever documents your business produces, such as business plans, PDFs,  printed books, eBooks, flyers, posters, brochures, letters, contracts, reports, web content, articles, blogs, news and much more…
